Q: They didn’t have much journalism in school?

A: Oh, not in a formal way, but we had some very knowledgeable professors, one of whom was a particular influence, Dr Fred Newton Scott. And he encouraged all of us to subscribe to the New York World, which in those days was a brilliantly written newspaper. This was back in 1911, 1912, 1913 — along in there.
