Broadreach Fiji Shark Studies — SS11 Update: Sunday, July 13, 2014 “16 and Babs”

Broadreach Fiji PapaToday’s update from Fiji was co-written by Holland and Paige:

Today was our final day of academic work. Everyone had an hour sleep in, and went to the dive shop to grab our gear to bring back to the house to dry. At the dive shop, many of us got the opportunity to get some Beqa Adventure Diver’s apparel. Although we are going to see the dive guys tomorrow afternoon for a kava ceremony, leaving the dive shop with all our gear made our soon departure feel closer. We got so accustomed to going on shark dives almost every day, and taking our gear back to our house confirmed the end of our diving on Shark Reef Marine Reserve.

For the first part of the day until 2pm, everyone finished up their research paper. The research paper was hard work, however, everyone completed it on time. Writing this research paper was very cool because it was similar to an actual scientific research paper and we used all of our own data from our shark dives. Then, we all took turns calling home. After a quick card game, we got ready to go to Arts Village for an hour, and the beach after that. At Arts Village, we stocked up on some snacks and went to a few souvenir stores. We also bought a few new movies for our last couple of nights here. Some people got to use the wifi and catch up with family and friends. After that, everyone piled in the van and hung out at the beach for a few hours. We ran into the college group who we later played an intense game of capture the flag with. Let’s just say that the rules were a bit obscure, but we won in our own eyes. Some of the locals joined in, and it quickly turned into a heated match, stretching along half the beach. After the game, we hung out on the picturesque beach and enjoyed the sunset.

Then, we went back to Arts Village to grab ice cream for Sofia’s 16th Birthday! When we got home, Allopidae cooked quesadillas at Sofia’s request, which pleased all of us! To end this relaxing day, we ate delicious Fun-fetti cake with vanilla frosting and chocolate ice cream made by Lindsay. We then watched a movie and prepared for FUNYAKING tomorrow! (kayaking with inflatable kayaks) We can’t believe that tomorrow is our last full day—this trip has flown by. Everyone has become so close and it is amazing how many things we did, how much we learned, and the incredible shark dives we went on.
